OVERVIEW

Meerlust Rubicon is a classic Cape blend, consisting of 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot. Deep purple in colour, its nose offers aromas of wild violets, ripe plum, cedar wood, fennel, and bold spices, with characteristic notes of graphite and liquorice.

The 2018 Meerlust Rubicon pairs beautifully with rich dishes that complement its bold structure and complexity. Grilled or roasted red meats such as lamb, venison, or beef steaks enhance the wine’s depth, while hearty stews like braised short ribs or beef bourguignon match its spiciness and savoury notes. Game birds, such as roast duck or quail with a rich sauce, also make an excellent pairing, bringing out the wine's plum and cedar nuances. For cheese lovers, aged cheeses like cheddar, gouda, or Parmesan work well with the wine’s tannins, and mushroom dishes, including mushroom risotto or anything with truffles, can highlight its earthy, aromatic character.

Meerlust is a renowned wine producer located in South Africa’s famed Stellenbosch region. The estate's name, meaning 'pleasure of the ocean,' reflects its scenic ocean views. Their flagship wine, Rubicon, was first crafted in 1984 and is a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend, featuring Merlot and Cabernet Franc. As one of South Africa's pioneering blended wines, it is only produced in vintages considered exceptional.
